DENVER - MaxFund may have the perfect antidote for chilly weather. Chili, the kind that heats your insides.
The 18th Annual MaxFund Chili Cool-off will be held Sunday from 1 to 3;30 p.m. at the Celtic Tavern LoDo in Delaney's Bar in Denver.
Proceeds will go to MaxFund, a no-kill Denver animal shelter and adoption center that takes on tough cases, such as Millie, a German Shepherd mix with a tragic story.
Millie apparently was hit by a car in Taos, N.M. Her back was broken and her hind legs were useless. Millie survived by dragging herself around.
She wound up at MaxFund, where a volunteer gave her a cart attached to her hind end so she could roll around. Eventually, Millie was adopted.
The chili cook-off will feature participants competing for a cash prize of $100 and a grand prize of $200 in four categories of chili: Red, Green, Vegetarian, and Professional Chef from Denver area restaurants.
There also will be celebrity chefs including Howie from the Bj, Howie and Jamie show on Alice 105.9, and Ms. Galaxy.
The Celtic Tavern will feature drink specials including $4 beers ($1 from every beer sold will be donated to MaxFund.)
MaxFund merchandise and goodies for pets will be available for sale.
The entry fee for cook-off participants is $30. Tasters, also serving as judges, will receive a tasting kit and can register online until today (Feb. 17) for $10, or pay $15 at the door.
Winners will be announced by 3:30 p.m.
MaxFund has placed more than 24,000 animals in new homes and has saved thousands with its spay and neuter program. Check the MaxFund website for more information.
